Documentary “Is The Village Dying?” Airing November 28th on OUTtv

18 Nov

I was busy over the course of the summer talking to people in Toronto about the current state of our city’s “gay village“. It has been a hot button topic for a couple years now with little consensus. With equal rights in Canada, including same-sex marriage, and a younger generation of LGBTQ people no longer feeling threatened in the streets or in mainstream bars and nightclubs, I wanted to explore whether or not we still need queer neighbourhoods or queer spaces.

So I ventured out to get a variety of opinions from prominent queer people in Toronto including former The Grid columnist Paul Aquirre-Livingston (who wrote the polarizing article “Dawn of a New Gay” in 2011), city councillor Kristyn Wong-Tam, former 1 Girl, 5 Gays cast member and party promoter Michael Yerxa and many more. As a number of notable businesses in Toronto’s own Church and Wellesley Village closed their doors during filming this summer and Toronto prepares to host World Pride in 2014, this documentary asks: Is the village dying?

The documentary will air as part of OUTtv‘s new doc-series “Outspoken” on Thursday, November 28th at 8pm ET/9pm PT and repeat throughout the week. Check OUTtv’s website for more details. Also watch out for the documentary at a festival near you. Details TBA.

MKW Interviews Jinkx Monsoon

10 Jul

I was able to take a wee break from annoying people all weekend on the microphone as Face of Furry Creek news anchor Mario Mancini at OUTtv‘s media tent during Toronto Pride this year. So I ripped off those curly locks for a moment to interview the fabulous and genuinely sweet Jinkx Monsoon for OutlookTV/OUTtv! With my green contacts and moustache still intact (ugh), I talked to the Rupaul’s Drag Race Season 5 winner about her cross-country tour of Canada, her first time out of the US and what makes a Jinkx show special. Check it out below!

“The Face of Furry Creek” TV Series and Digital Companion To Debut June 3rd, 2013

9 May

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

“THE FACE OF FURRY CREEK” TV SERIES AND ONLINE DIGITAL COMPANION TO DEBUT JUNE 3rd, 2013.

Toronto, Ontario – May 9th, 2013:  MKW Productions, with the participation of OUTtv Network and the Bell New Media Fund, are pleased to announce the release of television series and online companion project The Face of Furry Creek beginning Monday, June 3rd, 2013 9pm ET/PT on OUTtv Network and www.faceoffurrycreek.com.

Created by comedy writer, producer and actor Mark Kenneth Woods, the scripted comedy series follows a mountain community on the brink of bankruptcy. When Furry Creek’s own Channel 12 holds a $25,000 contest to find “the face” of their town’s new tourism campaign, 5 desperate candidates compete, lie and cheat their way to becoming “The Face of Furry Creek”.

Parodying every reality show from “Housewives” to “Dance Moms”, the financially-troubled citizens of Furry Creek, all played by Mark Kenneth Woods, Michael VenusAmy Goodmurphy and Ryan Steele in multiple roles and genders, jump at the chance to audition and compete for the $25,000 prize. In each episode, the selected contestants are asked to create various digital media that will then be posted on our new media companion project www.faceoffurrycreek.com

Designed as the fictitious Channel 12 contest website, each week the audience will have access to website-exclusive digital media that they have seen the characters work towards in the television series. All for free. Contest task results take the form of pictures, blog entries, videos, social media musings and more, and will be posted daily during the series’ initial television run. Additionally, the website experience will offer weekly recap videos, exclusive interviews with the contestants, lost audition tapes, daily Furry Creek news and a ridiculous reunion special. The online digital experience is now live at www.faceoffurrycreek.com with trailers, bios and teasers.

The television series will air Mondays at 9pm ET/PT on OUTtv Network in Canada beginning June 3rd, 2013 with the related digital media being posting during each new weekly episode. News on US and other territory broadcasts is expected soon.

Full episodes and more information are available on our password protected press page. Please contact the following for access, review requests, interviews or any press-related enquiries:

We’d be pleased to share the absurd world of Furry Creek with you.

MKW Interviews Sharon Needles on OUTtv

20 Mar

If you have OUTtv, you’ve probably seen the wee short version of my interview with the winner of Season 4 of RuPaul’s Drag Race,  Sharon Needles. It’s only been airing after every episode of the current season of RuPaul’s Drag Race! Yikes. But now you can watch the longer MKW edit at just over 5 minutes.

I had the pleasure of interviewing the queen of haunt for OUTtv and Outlook TV during her tour’s Toronto stop. We chatted about life after Drag Race, her baby Alaska Thunderf*ck (who is on the current season) and, of course, “why do you think you are nuts”. Happy Halloween!
